We were used to playing on [T] Base and MjTavern mostly. Although there always were many players, it was quite boring because the game was still same. 120 build points is default, I guess. There are only 2 options for a base:
That's why people used to say “don't build if you're a noob” and so on. It was like a training server. Over and over again. Rotacak told me about Harwes Unlimited one day. There were unlimited build points, but every player's ping was about 200-700.
I've played a few times there. I'm better attacking than building. But I couldn't attack with so high ping. A few weeks later, I found out a friend of Rotacak could create a Tremulous server. Well, it ran on a PC and a standard home internet connection, but it was still better than nothing. And Tremulous is open source, so it can be enhanced. Rotacak has named the server R Unlimited CZ. R should mean Rotacak. Anyway, I think it was a testing name.
Of all Tremulous servers, there were only 2 unlimited servers. R Unlimited CZ's popularity was rising. It was wonderful to see players who came back over and over again. Ping was quite good when Rotacak's friend wasn't downloading. This era lasted for about 2 years. I've met plenty of interesting players – and idiots as well. We were used to using only permanent bans because we thought that stupid players are not welcome on R Unlimited CZ. It was pretty strict. Just imagine if you team bleed once you will be banned for the rest of your life. Rotacak has also developed several improvements on the server.
I remember we were thinking of notification of the Overmind or the reactor being attacked. I think we would laugh about this incident now. Anyway, there were more and more server improvements that made R Unlimited CZ unique.
One of the permanent players on R Unlimited CZ decided to create a TremX unlimited server. He evidently changed his mind, because the server he has created was Amsterdam Unlimited. Almost the same players were playing on Amsterdam Unlimited.
After a few weeks, Rotacak's friend told him that he won't host the server for free anymore. Well, we had a donation banner on the forum but it, but without success. We knew the server could not be hosted there forever. So R Unlimited CZ was turned off from day to day.
I felt like my favourite restaurant where I was eating and chatting with my friends was closed. Almost all admins from R Unlimited CZ moved to Amsterdam Unlimited. An admin from R Unlimited CZ named Troy offered to Rotacak the highest admin level and rename from Amsterdam Unlimited to R Unlimited CZ. Rotacak didn't agree, because he thought they could have words with them later and the server would go to hell.
Amsterdam Unlimited was more and more popular. We were playing on TremSpain. It was an unlagged server and we also had a good ping. We were playing there for about one year. Well I didn't notice many new friends I met there. I didn't want to be an admin there. It was kind of freeing to care about playing only. It's also the reason why I don't understand others want to be an admin. An admin has to be objective, he has to ban his best friend if he breaks rules. Players like to test admins. They also like to complain about admins. So you cannot give them an opportunity for that.
One of the admins on the former R Unlimited CZ (kaotaja) offered a new server to replace R Unlimited CZ to Rotacak. It was named R Funserver CZ. First there were no rules, but it attracted only aimbotters and idiots. They imposed rules there a few months later. Rotacak was still trying to figure out building on a building, because he thought that it would be popular. Once he got advice on how to do it, he implemented it on R Funserver CZ. There was one bug. First 2 buildings didn't appear stacked, but inside each other. This bug was fixed several months later by a new QVM, I think. They also added infinite reactors and overminds. Once R Funserver CZ was rising in popularity, kaotaja told Rotacak that he was moving away. The server was shut down.
I was co-operating with a friend of mine in those days. He owned some servers so I asked him if he could host a tremulous server. He told me he'll try it and if it's not too demanding for the server, he'll turn it on. He allowed only 20 slots there. The server was turned on that day. I was chatting with Rotacak, saying that we need to put R Unlimited CZ there as soon as possible. Rotacak didn't want to upgrade R Unlimited CZ to a new version of Lakitu's QVM, but once he imagined the old good R Unlimited CZ, he agreed.
But R Unlimited CZ was shut down for too long a time. Players forgot about it. Nobody was playing there. We decided to be online the whole day even with the client launched multiple times. Some players began to play there when they saw some players online. We had to play every time someone connected to the server. It was better and better. In a few months players were visiting the server several times per day.
Anyway it was about 2 years since the old R Unlimited CZ. Many players have stopped playing Tremulous; some new players began to play.
Rotacak and his friend bought a server. He regenerated R Funserver CZ. I had words with my friend a few months later, so we had to move R Unlimited CZ to Rotacak's server. It was all right, moved by that day.
R Funserver CZ is the most popular of all R CZ servers version 1.1. R Unlimited CZ of version 1.2 is also very popular. It's harder to lure new players to R Funserver CZ because there are some client modifications which need a player to have auto-download turned on.
